How a French shoe company is protecting forests and improving livelihoods in the Brazilian Amazon: the case of Veja

French footwear manufacturer Veja has strengthened a lucrative and sustainable arrangement for the native rubber supply chain from the Chico Mendes Extractive Reserve in Acre, Brazil.

With the support of Partnerships for Forests, Veja generated social and economic impacts in the protected area, enabling the sustainable extraction of native rubber. The company implemented deforestation monitoring and inclusive governance systems, adopted a model of financial incentives for rubber tappers who protect the forest, made communities aware of best practices for rubber production, and valued the role of women in the supply chain.

This case study brings together several lessons learned.
