Our approach

Latin America is home to a third of the world’s rainforests and over 60% of global biodiversity, yet it loses 3.5 million hectares of forest each year. With 100 million hectares needing regeneration and growing interest in sustainable business models, the region holds immense potential for sustainable and inclusive growth.

To unlock investment in regenerative business models in Latin America, we are focusing on the commodities and land-use sectors with the greatest potential to regenerate landscapes, combat deforestation, and build inclusive, resilient forest-based economies.

In Brazil, Colombia, and Peru, we have five priority sectors – cattle ranching, soya and other large-scale crops, timber, non-timber forest products (NTFPs), and restoration. These sectors have the potential to tackle the major drivers of deforestation and offer sustainable alternatives to business as usual.

To reinforce and complement this work, we will also focus on empowering smallholder farmers and small-scale producers, developing carbon and ecosystem services schemes, and strengthening the role of protected areas in sustainable rural economies.

By working with entrepreneurs, producers, investors, and governments, we aim to shift these sectors toward models that are sustainable, inclusive, and investable – each offering a unique opportunity to align climate, biodiversity, and development goals with thriving businesses.

Building on impact

During the first phase of the programme, P4F supported 41 initiatives across Brazil, Colombia and Peru. This work helped demonstrate the viability of forest-friendly business models and unlock private sector investment at scale. Regional achievements included:

  • 3.5 million hectares of land brought under sustainable management
  • 3,225 people positively impacted through improved livelihoods and opportunities
  • Mobilised over £112 million in private investment for forest-friendly business
